Q: I have a wonderful 10 year old Appy who is doing 2nd Level Dressage but has been diagnosed with navicular. He keeps sound on Bute, but how much Bute is too much? Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

A: Sounds to me like you have already got a handle on the problem.

As far as how much Bute is too much, I can not really say. I am not a veterinarian and therefore can not diagnose or prescribe medication for any lameness. However, I will say that some horses seem to do fine on 1 or 2 grams of Bute daily all their lives. Other horses become toxic if on Bute for more than 3 days. Whatever your vet has prescribed is obviously working. I would stick with it.

For other suggestions, I would recommend you read my Q&A entitled Small Feet/Navicular. I discuss shoeing for navicular there.

Congratulations on your wonderful ten year old Appy doing 2nd level.
